about

I am happy to announce the release of my new album, "The Weight Of These Things". I have never been so proud of something I've created. This record has a great deal of meaning to me and how far I've come musically. It's very much a documentation of the past 10 years of my life. I am connected to this album...more than anything I've done in my entire music career and I really hope all of you enjoy it.

I'm someone who still believes in albums. As an artist these days, we constantly hear how no one cares about albums anymore. That they don't matter. I don't believe that. I believe that songs are snapshots of time and an album of snapshots tell a deeper, more interesting story. When you connect with an artist, you want to hear more than just one song.

Therefore, I encourage you to listen to this album the way it was intended, as a collection of songs placed in an order that can take you on a journey if you let it. Of course, I feel that all of these songs stand on their own, and you can certainly pick and choose if you like, but I definitely feel there's something to the way it all goes together as an album. At the end of the day, I'm simply making a suggestion.

I recorded "The Weight Of These Things" in Portsmouth, Rhode Island over 2 weeks in February of 2014 at Stable Sound Studios with my good friend and co-producer, Steve Rizzo. The studio, attached to a working horse stable, is a magical space that I first stepped foot in 20 years ago when my band out of college, Soul Food, recorded our debut album. To go back after all of these years was a full circle experience and put into perspective how far I've come in life and as a musician. It was amazing to work with Steve from a much more mature approach as an artist and to really be able to relate and collaborate with him on a whole new level. Steve is amazingly talented and his touch is very much a part of this record.

We were going for something very specific in our intentions for this album. We wanted the focus to be the songs and for the core to be me and my guitar. We tracked all of the songs as live performances of just my vocal and guitar together in a room with almost no editing. From there, we added extra guitars or other instrument overdubs, but only if the song called for it. Our approach was to only add what the song needed, no more. Because of this approach, it's a very live record.

When it was all said and done, we achieved a very dynamic collection of songs with a very cohesive theme. Songs like "45" and "Just Don't Know" wanted to have drums, bass, vocal harmonies and extra guitars, whereas other songs like "Valentine" and "Good To Be Bad" stayed pretty simple as just guitars and vocal. The musicians we had play on the album did an amazing job of playing to those original live tracks and maintaining the core feel. You would think they were in the room with me the whole time. They each enhanced the performances beautifully without losing any of the personality of the tracks.

On the Bandcamp page where you will be downloading the album, you can click the individual songs and read some of the background of how the song was written and/or recorded as well as the lyrics. Over time, I'll add videos and other cool stuff that I can share. I plan to edit together a little documentary of the album based on the footage I've collected. Now that it's finished, it's going to be fun to look back on the process and moments we had making it.

Those of you who donated to my Pledgemusic Campaign, first of all, thank you! I couldn't have done this album without you. Seriously. It's been fun to share the experience of making this album with you. You guys have had an inside look into how the album was made and have seen a lot of footage from the studio and how the album came to life. I will be sharing more of that footage and stories with everyone now that the album is completed.

I'm using Bandcamp to release the album online because it's a great platform for artists to release their music, interact with fans, keep control and have all of the money go directly to the artist. I have chosen to use a "pay what you want" format because it's most important right now for me to get the music to everyone that wants it. It helps me most for this music to find it's way to everyone that gets something from it and enjoys it. Of course, I love to have your support so I can continue to do shows and make more music, but I want you to hear it more than anything.

So, this is what I ask. If you want the music for free, please take it. It will just ask you for your email so I can stay in touch with you. I probably already have it anyways if you're on this list. If you like the album, recommend it to a friend or gift a copy of the album to someone you think will like it. The more people talk about it and share it, the more it spreads and opens opportunities for me.

If you choose to pay for the album, pay what you want and thank you in advance for supporting music. Every sale helps me continue to do this and make more music. I appreciate your belief in me and can't thank you enough. It truly means the world.

All PledgeMusic contributors will be receiving an email with a download code. This is the fully mastered recording that is different from the version I previously released to pledgers. Be sure to get it even if you've already been listening to what you downloaded from Pledge. This is new and improved!

So, now, without further adieu, here's my new album!

Track Name: Good To Be Bad
GOOD TO BE BAD

All she wanted was war
All I wanted was a girl to adore
I tried to give her my name
She threw it down on the floor

Every promise I gave
She made a run for the door
Did everything to treat her like she never had before
But I could treat her like a $2 whore and she'd love me more

Looks like it's Good to be Bad and Bad to be Good
Sometimes it's Good to be Bad and Bad to be Good

The day turns to night
Not afraid of the dark, it's alright
It's a dangerous life
Like Juggling knives

Well, I guess that it's true
Tried to fight it, it ain't no use
This world can be cruel, what's there to do?
It's hard when nobody's living by the Golden Rule

Looks like it's Good to be Bad and Bad to be Good
Sometimes it's Good to be Bad and Bad to be Good
Looks like it's Good to be Bad and Bad to be Good
Sometimes it's Good to be Bad and Bad to be Good
Track Name: 45
45

Classic’s got some kind of sexy
You feeling me?
Never saw it clear til it left me
What was I expecting
How could it ever be the same
It never even had to change
Well, well

CHORUS:
Let’s give pop back to the people
You’re the groove, I’m the needle
Wanna play ya like a 45 record
Why don’t ya
Get up on my turntable
if you’re willing, I’m able
to wear ya out like a 45 record
Why don’t ya

There’s something to be said for the old days
Remember the old ways
Given the chance Everything could be saved
But now it’s all been taken away
How could it ever be the same
It never even had to change
Well, well, well

CHORUS

Remember when pop stood for popular
People made it cool cuz they liked it first
Just another thing that gets manufactured
Humanity took a turn for the worst
The Truth is, there’s really no quick solution
It’s gonna all lead to a revolution
Like freedom of speech, the constitution
Don’t worry baby, it’s evolution
Hard to believe we ain’t come too far
(since) Video killed the radio star
(They) force feed pop like it comes in a jar
Taking the taste out of who we are
No wonder why the world is so cold…
That’s the repercussions of selling your soul
Track Name: Shame
SHAME

You wanna make it right, but you won’t
Wanna change your tune, but you don’t
Wanna change the world, but you choke

You wonder why the drugs didn’t help
Or how it just gets loud when you yell
Got to stop lying to your self
You’re the only one who can make it change

Don’t try to tell me (3x)
You ain’t got yourself to blame
For the reason who lost love and the money
Now it’s all gone, but it ain’t so funny
Don’t try to tell me (3x)
You ain’t got no shame

I’ll admit I had a hand in this mess
No angel or saint, I confess
Got to come clean with this
Baby, I’ve done all that I can do
Given up on trying to get through
Never giving up on you
No, I’m never giving up on you, baby.

Don’t try to tell me (3x)
Any more reasons why I shouldn’t put up a fight,
That you’re just doing what’s right
Ain’t so black and white.

Why’s it got to be so tough
How can you say you’ve had enough
How can you walk away, we had love
Oh, when we had love baby

Don’t try to tell me (3x)
You ain’t got no shame
Don’t try to tell me (3x)
You ain’t got yourself to blame
For the reason who lost love and the money
Now it’s all gone, but it ain’t so funny
Track Name: Valentine
Valentine

I bought you flowers for Valentine’s Day
One dozen roses came just a little too late…it was the month of May
Don’t you know that I picked those pedals all day
Just trying to figure out if you were feeling the same
CHORUS
‘Said, ”please don’t think that I’m just wasting your time
Won’t you let me down easy if I can’t change your mind
You’ll feel just what you’re missing when we’re kissing goodbye
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”

My best intention just ain’t good enough
I've gotta wonder why I haven’t given up on love
And why you don’t realize every time that I looks in your eyes
I send this message with love

CHORUS
‘Said, “please don’t think that I’m just wasting your time
Won’t you let me down easy if I can’t change your mind
You’ll feel just what your missing when we’re kissing goodbye
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”

‘Said, “please don’t think that I’m just wasting your time
Won’t you let me down easy if I can’t change your mind
You’ll feel just what your missing when we’re kissing goodbye
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”

Track Name: Maybe Tonight
Maybe Tonight

I want to kiss you in a way
that you can't deny those lips are mine…those lips are mine

I want to touch you
In a moment that feels just right…maybe tonight…maybe tonight?

Your lips, they just won't quit
Locked to mine, they'd be a perfect fit.
Your smile, ain't seen it around for a while
When it shines, I feels so good inside
No need to waste time wondering why

I want to love you
Leave all those bad days behind
We don't have to try…don't have to try

Give me one more chance
You won't be turning back
I'll be the best love(r) you've ever had
Got my eyes open wide this time
The ticking of the clock is just making me wise up
Nothing you've got to do
Nothing you've got to prove
Just let me sing these words to you

I want to love you
Leave all those bad days behind
We don't have to try…don't have to try

I want to kiss you in a way
that you can't deny
Those lips are mine
Maybe tonight
Maybe tonight
Track Name: Just Don't Know
Just Don’t Know
Lyrics by Joel Eckels

I’m a fool cuz I loved you
I’m a fool cuz I love what you do
You get off on it, don’t you
Listen to me sweat you while I sing this tune
I know that you’re no good for me
But I find ito so hard to believe

Chorus:
I just don’t know how to let go
Just don’t know how to say no
I wish you’d pick up the phone
Cuz I just don’t know how to be alone

I always knew you were nasty
Like the time we got down on my balcony
Never knew there was a lie you’d get past me
But now I’m finding out I’m writing off the whole damn thing
I know that you’re no good for me
But I can’t get enough of your body

Chorus:
I just don’t know how to let go
Just don’t know how to say no
Just pick up the phone
Cuz I just don’t know how to be alone

I know that you’re no good for me
I know that you’re no good for me

Chorus:
Just don’t know how to say no
Just don’t know how to be alone
So just pick up the phone
I just don’t know how to let go
Track Name: The Devil's Heart
The Devil’s Heart

Think there’s something wrong with me
Let another good girl down
I didn’t know what to do
So, I told her the truth

Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
It’s the only thing he would take
To let me spare my soul

I think it’s something kind of safe
A loner in this star walk town
Where love only exists in a song
It hurts then it’s gone
See I’ve spent my whole life
Just tryin to get it right
Now I’m closer than I ever could be
So, get out of my way now
Oh, you’ve got to lay down
Later, I’ll give you all the lovin’ you need

Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
It’s the only thing he would take
I had to save my soul

I went to the crossroads such a long time ago
Searching for the key to the dream
They gave me the good stuff
But, you know it’s never enough
Got to find your own way back to love

Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the…
Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
gave my heart to the devil
gave my heart to the devil
Track Name: Back O My Hand
BACK O MY HAND

It’s getting late and we don’t agree
Stop trying to put the blame on me
Not trying to start anything

Can’t really say what goes wrong
Or why we can’t get along
Or how you still turn me on

I never knew you could swing like that
You better never do it again
You make me want to turn it around,
but I'm not that kind of man

So, with the back o my hand
I’m writing you this song
Tried to love you but it took too long
Had your chance, but now it’s gone
Must be something that I said
It's always something that I said
I don't even know what I did

Cuz you either love me or love me not
What is it that you really want?
I'm not another man playing with your heart\

I always knew you were a tough girl
Daughter of a son of a gun
But I never knew you could swing like that
Tonight you'd better run
So, with the back o my hand
I’m writing you this song
Tried to love you but it took too long
Had your chance, but now it’s gone
Track Name: Girl
GIRL

Wait a minute Baby, there’s so much to say
All I want is communication
Guess it got in the way
It was over when we started
Thought it’d never hurt to try
It’s hard to deal with broken hearted
When you just ask your self why

CHORUS:
You can see it in her eyes, She’s got soul
That’s the kind of girl you take home
Well it might be too late when you know
That she’s not the kind of girl you let go

She’s the spirit when you need it
Like a glass of red wine
She’s the hope when you’re defeated
So don’t make her cry
I said, “Girl, you’re too beautiful for this shady bar”
Then we went back to my apartment
Spun The Concert in Central Park
Then we made love til the sun stopped the dark

CHORUS
You can see it in her eyes, She’s got soul
That’s the kind of girl you take home
Well it might be too late when you know
That she’s not the kind of girl you let go
She’s not that kind of girl, no

Bring me back my baby
I’m lost without my baby
Been too long without my baby
Don’t say it’s too late
Don’t say it’s too late
Don’t say it’s too late

CHORUS
You can see it in her eyes, She’s got soul
That’s the kind of girl you take home
Well it might be too late when you know
That she’s not the kind of girl you let go
Track Name: The Weight Of These Things
The Weight of These Things

Don’t know where to go, guess the joke’s on me
Guess I’m moving too slow to ever keep anything
There’s a story in every song I sing
Every love that I’ve lost, every thought that I think
I could never ask you to carry that weight with me
I could never ask you to carry the weight of these things

You’re just a girl who’s looking for someone to love
So much to give, so much to take
So much you only could dream of
I should go ahead and just let you win
I should never second guess again
If only you could see the shape that I’m in
The shape that I’m in

You’ll never want to hear me sing that song
Cause the good ones come when the love is gone
If you’re hearing these words you know that day has come
Believe me when I tell you that you did nothing wrong
I’m a good man trapped in this vagabond
I love you baby, but I must be moving on
Said, I love you baby but I must be moving on

Don’t know where to go, guess the joke’s on me
Guess I’m moving too slow to ever keep anything
There’s a story in every song I sing
Every love that I’ve lost, every thought that I think
I could never ask you to carry that weight with me
I could never ask you to carry the weight of these things
